Christmas already?!

So apparently Christmas is this weekend. What the?! Where did the year go? The last thing I remember is celebrating Australia Day, then I go back to work for a bit and apparently now it’s Christmas! Wow.

Is it just me, or is time (or, at least, the impression of time) speeding up? And I know I say that at the end of every year (as does everyone), but has anyone actually checked? Actually, I figure it would be quite hard to check – you’d need to be in a different reality or something in order to measure if our time is indeed going faster, but you’d think that by now, someone would have figured out how to do that. Perhaps Dr Who will know? …I must remember to ask him next time I see him :P.

So yeah… Christmas. The time of year when people are supposed to be caring and loving and what-not, but their lives are so busy that the end up rushing around like a headless chook and end up doing neither of the above in the process. Yesterday, for example, my boyfriend and I went to Carindale for a spot of “general” and Christmas-related shopping but the spirit of Christmas seemed to have been throw out with the old aqua-coloured carpet they’ve finally replaced there.

Why do we need a time of year to be caring & loving, anyway? We should be caring & loving all year ’round. I know I try to be. Yet turning on the news we have stories of crimes, murders, rapes, road rage… the list goes on. I suppose that’s why I stopped watching the news. In fact, I don’t even own a TV tuner. Haven’t done so for about 4 or 5 years. It’s all just ads and trollop these days anyway… plus most stations repeat shows online, so if I *really* want to watch something, I can always grab it ad-free from the website. Gee, this is turning into a good old fashioned PandaRant[TM], isn’t it? I used to rant a lot on here – just go back through my old diary entries from the mid 2000’s and you’ll find they were a lot more “bitey”. I guess I’ve become less ranty these days.

But I digress. Back to shopping! The shopping trip was pretty good, but the general vibe was a bit “blerg”. Every store had a sale on and you could just tell they were desperate to make money, which in itself is kind-of sad. Then you go in and they’re all playing Christmas carols by either Mariah Carey (BRB, cutting) or Justin Bieber (BRB, cutting). The staff, most likely sick to the teeth of hearing carols & being pushed hard by management to make a sale, are all fake smiles and generic waffles of small-talk… ugh, this is precisely why I shop online.

Then we were walking between stores and, whilst I was deep in conversation with my partner about quantum flux theories & inter-dimensional spatial rifts, a lady from one of the centre-aisle stores steps out and offers me some free moisturiser (“Would you like some free moisturiser?”) in a little single-use sachet. I decided to take it and said “Thanks” – then returned to the aforementioned conversation about anomalies in the space-time continuum and what-not… but she interrupts and says that she “…needs to ask me a question now” – to which I responded: “Oh, I didn’t realise it came with a catch?”, placed the microscopic sachet back in her hand and continued walking. And I do mean microscopic sachet. It wouldn’t have even been enough to moisturise a gnat (pronounced – in my case – with a non-silent “g”).

Nothing’s really actually free anymore, is it? There’s always a catch, some fineprint and the dreaded superscript asterisk. Sometimes I kinda wish I could turn back time and go back to the 80’s… things seemed a lot nicer then; of course, I was a child so perhaps I was just oblivious to it all, but who knows. Maybe one day it’ll be possible to travel backwards in time. Then again, there are some things I really like about the world at the moment – like the social aspect, the advancements in technology and the fact that family & friends – like you – make me happy & content. It’s the simple things that count, but are so often overlooked these days.

So while this blog doesn’t really have a point to it (I kind-of just felt like writing a blog for the hell of it :P), if you want to take something from it, make it this: Smile at someone you pass, wave to a driver that lets you in & just ‘slow down’ & disconnect from everything once in a while. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you for it… 🙂 Merry Christmas.

So well said and I totally agree. We should care for each other 365 days a year and show unconditional love. The world would be a better place.
    Have a wonderful festive season.

It seems to be getting worse, too - probably the pressures of life, time, finances, etc. I wonder when the bubble will burst? :-P
