Botanical Cafe

If you’ve ever been to the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens over the years, you’ll probably remember the cafe near the entrance. I first remember it as a child and it used to be “cafeteria-style” where you’d grab a plastic tray at the start and then slide it along as you walked along the cabinets selecting food you wanted and placing it on your tray; at the end was a checkout.

I specifically remember this because they used to have these tall sundae glasses filled with cubes of brightly-coloured jelly, topped with custard. My parents always let me brother & I have one… 😀 It was saddening, then, when they changed it… the slidey-tray system was gone, as were the colourful jelly cubes with custard; fond memories are all that remain. Over the years, it got progressively worse, until a few years ago when it hit rock bottom (my personal opinion, of course). A very simple “cafe” (if you could call it that), selling overpriced sandwiches & baguettes… none of which tasted very nice. The coffee left much to be desired. I was run down, overpriced, not much fun & full of bad memories given our last experience there.

So much so, that when our usual gang planned a Planetarium visit (click for the photos), I warned the group of the crappy cafe and most of them decided to have lunch at home. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when I Google’d the cafe’s website merely hours prior to our trip… www.botanical.co. With an odd domain name, I first thought that perhaps it was the website of some other botanical gardens cafe; but their phone number & address soon clarified the point. The crappy cafe is indeed, no longer. Finally.

So… without further delay – here are the photos from our lovely lunch (and again for afternoon tea / coffee-‘n-cake!) at the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens Cafe (thanks to my BF Dale for taking some of thee photos for me)..
